ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FIRE ENGINES?

There are 7 types of fire engines, from the type 1, which is the most popular to more rugged types, known as wildland engines, that are used for fighting wild fires and going over tough terrain.

TYPE 1 FIRE ENGINE

A type 1 fire engine is the most common fire truck seen in cities and suburban areas. It is sometimes called a ladder truck, engine pumper or engine company. The type 1 fire truck responds to structure fires and other emergency medical calls and carries all the required firefighting equipment for being a first responder vehicle.

TYPE 2 FIRE ENGINE

Type 2 fire engines are very similar to the type 1, but are more compact. They are typically the most common fire truck to respond in suburban areas. They are versatile and carry all required lifesaving tools. A type 2 fire truck is likely to arrive to vehicle accidents or other rescue scenes before other emergency support arrives.

Type 3 fire truck, also called a brush truck or wildland

TYPE 3 FIRE ENGINE

The type 3 fire engine, along with the type 4 and type 6 fire trucks, are called "wildland" or brush trucks because they respond to more rural settings and wildfires. The type 3 fire truck sits on a 4x4 chassis so it can drive over rougher terrains to get very close to the fire.

The type 4 fire truck is a wildland truck built for rural areas

TYPE 4 FIRE ENGINE

The type 4 fire engine is very similar to the type 3 and is also known as a wildland engine. Another 4x4 fire truck, the type 4 differs from the type 3 in that it has a larger water tank, but it has a smaller pump and less hose in order to accommodate the bigger tank.

TYPE 5, TYPE 6 & TYPE 7 FIRE ENGINE

Type 5, Type 6, and Type 7 fire engines all have similar design features in that they use a pick-up truck medium-duty chassis and are 4x4 fire trucks. The type 6 fire truck is known as a wildland,  but has a smaller configuration than the type 3 and type 4. These fire engines are customized for the specific needs of a department and can serve as an EMS response unit or an initial fire suppression unit.
