ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AMBULANCES?

There are 3 main types of ambulances in the U.S.: Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3

TYPE 1 AMBULANCE

Type 1 Ambulance Truck

A type 1 or type I ambulance is sometimes referred to as an ambulance truck. This ambulance is mounted on a truck-style chassis and the cab part of the ambulance looks like a regular pickup truck. Access between the cab and the back patient area is small and window-like.

The type 1 models are typically found on a Ford F450, Ford F550, Chevy 4500HD, Chevy 5500HD, RAM 4500 or RAM 5500 chassis.

TYPE 2 AMBULANCE

A type 2 or type II ambulance is built on a van chassis and uses the van body style. It is sometimes called an ambulance van. The type 2 ambulance is not as popular in the U.S. as in other countries, but it is still used, mostly by hospitals or when transporting patients that only need basic life support features.

This ambulance type typically uses a Mercedes Sprinter van or Ford Transit chassis.

Type 3 Ambulance

A type 3 or type III ambulance looks very similar to a type 1. The only real difference between the two is that a type 3 ambulance is mounted on a van chassis and the front looks more like a van. The access between the cab and patient area is more of a doorway, rather than a window.

The type III uses an E-series Ford or G-series Chevy chassis.
