Why Proper Off-Road Tire Mounting Matters

Correct tire mounting helps protect personnel and equipment while allowing the tire to perform as intended. Incorrect fitting can damage the tire or vehicle and create risks for personnel, which is why mounting and dismounting procedures should be performed by trained personnel using appropriate equipment.

Michelin tube tires must be fitted with the appropriate flap and tube combination. When mounting or dismounting any tire, always follow the technical instructions provided by the wheel manufacturer and vehicle manufacturer, as well as the operating instructions for the mounting equipment.

Before mounting or dismounting an off-road tire, operators should take appropriate safety precautions and make sure the vehicle and equipment are properly secured.

Operators should:

  • Wear appropriate protective gear.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stopped, the engine is off and the parking brake is securely applied.
  • Secure the vehicle to prevent movement, including blocking or chocking it as appropriate.


These precautions should be followed before beginning tire mounting or dismounting procedures.

Before dismounting an off-road tire, make sure the tire and wheel assembly are in a safe condition for removal and follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedures.

When Removing the Wheel From the Vehicle

  • If the tire is part of a dual-tire assembly, or if the rim is visibly damaged, completely deflate the tire by removing the valve body before removing the mounted assembly.
  • Make sure the tire temperature is safe before removal and dismounting.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and dismounting instructions.

  • Before beginning any dismounting procedure, completely deflate the tire by removing the valve body.
  • Make sure the tire is fully deflated before proceeding with removal from the wheel.

Precautions for Mounting Off-Road Tires

Before mounting an off-road tire, follow the applicable tire, wheel and vehicle manufacturer instructions and observe the following precautions.

  • Inspect the wheel and components. Make sure the wheel and its components are in good condition before mounting.
  • Confirm tire and wheel compatibility. Check tire-to-wheel fitment and make sure the wheel has the appropriate pressure capacity.
  • Follow tire mounting markings. Observe any position, mounting direction, direction of rotation or other mounting instructions marked on the tire sidewall.
  • Replace the O-ring on tubeless multi-piece wheels. When mounting a tubeless tire on a multi-piece wheel, replace the O-ring seal.
  • Check or replace tubeless tire valves and seals. For tubeless installations:
    • Rubber valve: Replace the valve.
    • Metal valve: Check that it is tight and replace the valve or seals if necessary.
  • Tighten the wheel to the specified torque. After mounting the wheel on the vehicle, use a torque wrench to tighten it to the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
